i've always been a crafter. when i was a kid i always copied the crafts
that my sister did like embroidery and felting. when i was around 12 or 13 my dad brought home a
bunch of jewlery making supples and i became obsessed with making bracelets, earrings and
necklaces. In high school i picked up crochet. and finally in december of 2024 i started
needlepoint. the point is i pick up new skills and drop them just as fast. my new years
reolution is to stick to needlepoint and crochet. sadly, i never took pictures of the things i
made until now.
New Craft Unlocked (12.15.2025)
About two weeks ago, I decided to give knitting a real shot. I had tried knitting a few
times before, but I always gave up because I struggled to make it look right. My stitches came
out twisted, so I would set them aside for months before trying again.
I realized that the direction you wrap the yarn when knitting really matters. In crochet,
I feel like it's easier to see which way you're wrapping the yarn with yarn over/yarn under. And
it doesn't make a huge difference if you do yarn under vs yarn over. It makes the fabric denser,
but it doesn't completely change the look of the individual stitches.
I have found that many beginner tutorials do not explain the structure of knitting.
Learning about how stitches are mounted made a huge difference for me. It was the moment
everything clicked. You should always knit in the leading leg, and the direction in which the
yarn is wrapped determines whether the leading leg is at the front or back of the needle.
Additionally, most tutorials mention wrapping the yarn without specifying the direction,
although there are multiple ways to knit.
I learned how to knit properly when I came across a tutorial for combination knitting,
where the person explained the structure of knitting to show the difference between the western
and eastern styles of knitting. I also found that combination knitting was easier for me
compared to the English and continental styles. I often still wrap my yarn the wrong way around
the needle, and it's not a big issue anymore because when I come across those twisted stitches,
I know how to fix them by just knitting into the leading leg( on the back of the needle), and it
fixes any issues.
So far, I have knit a very fugly skinny scarf before I learned that stockinette stitch
tends to curl. I’ve also knit a pair of mittens.
